I agree on the difficulty that the text presents to its readers. However, I do recommend reading it with the help of some notes (like Barron's Book Notes) which will certainly shed lots of light as to the complexities of this masterpiece. It would also be enlightning to glean some information about the literary technique called "Stream of Consciousness", which Henry James allegedly used in the governess, thus originating this dual interpretation of most dialogues in the story.
