i loved what you had to say about the psycholigical aspects of James' Turn of the Screw. Im writing a paper on it and was wondering if you had any other places either with your thoughts or the thoughts of others on this topic. thanks

Turn of the Screw is probably the best ghost story ever written for obvious reasons. To answer the question above, though ("why write a story w/ so many different interpretations?"), James is showing true dementia at its best, and dementia is not always logical. The "turn of the screw" is whether there is any ghost or not. It's one of the most psychological short stories ever (with the exception of Faulkner's Dry September); James leaves so many openings for the reader to fill in. For example, why Miles was sent home. My answer to this is he was expelled because of his homosexual tendencies ("I said these things to people I liked," etc). Obviously none of the members of the household are completely psychologically stable. Jame's use of Jungian archetypes, specifically the Mother, is fantastic. Email me if you'd like more info on this (I am writing a thesis on this).
