early critical reviews can be dangerous, it can take a lot of time (years) for any relevant reviews on works that are complex - like joyce's are

I recently read an interesting review of Ulysses by Edmund Wilson written shortly after Ulysses was published. I don't have a hyperlink to it, but check it out if you're interested in Ulysses and want to hear some well thought-out opinions on the book. Until I read this I'd heard few critical remarks on the book and Wilson, while acknowledging Joyce's genius, points out many of the book's less obvious flaws. I don't remember the precise phrasing, but I'll try to give an example.
In one of the heaviest criticisms, Wilson accuses Joyce of relying too greatly on his talent for mimicing styles, and not even doing this very well in some parts, for example, while the scene takes place in a news room, the paragraphs are set up with headlines and articles.... it continues with such criticism.

Just food for thought.
