PALESE! Come on people! Is a fictional book meant to entertain. It is not an abolishionist piece about the horrors of slavery and prejudice. It is a wonderful tale that enthralls readers of all ages. Don't look into it so deeply to find an "inexcusable" portryal of blacks. It is a story, not a piece meant to educate or form opinions. Everyone should know that! Lighten up!

A far more interesting book than any adaptation I've seen. The development of Tarzan's character is realistic and interesting. The author's portrayal of blacks is inexcusable however. Especially the constant references to 'blacks' as being inhuman monsters and the black 'negress' nurse of Jane who's character consists of fainting out of fear. Otherwise, an interesting and worthwhile novel.

You know, these type people must be the same ones who make those awful movies in which Tarzan is reduced to a monsyllibic idiot instead of the very intelligent person who spoke many languages fluently in the books. Tarzan was friendly with several black tribes and spoke their languages. It was canibals that were "inhuman". Does the name Hannibal Lector ring a bell as being "inhuman"? He was white. Jeffrey Dahlmer? Also white. The canibalistic act is inhuman, regardless of color of skin. Lovecraft wrote of this practice in his horror stories because of the terror of its inhumanity. Not racism. Ya, Tarzan didn't have a grudge against the tribespeople because they were black, he had a grudge against them because they killed his mother and were cannibals. The author, however, just spoke the way most other authors spoke in that age, even better actually.
