Of course Mr. Forster did not want to write something sensational and too dramatic about life. This novel is one of his best to catch the unavoidable trivialities of our life, nomatter it is a century ago or now. We live in our milieu and we can never escape it, like Lucy and her people. But this doesn't mean tragedy. There are always things to amuse us, as long as we catch them. I think this is Forster's purpose: He teaches us how to grasp the inevitabilities of life, how to make our choice and how to amuse ourselves in our own trivial life. I read this book for countless times, and I still enjoy it.
