I am reading "A Brave New World" for a book club I recently joined. I have read some of Huxley's non-fiction before and enjoyed it. I have a lot of respect for Huxley and the way he elucidates difficult ideas. This is the first of his fiction I have read and I was surprised (understated) to discover how poorly written it is. I must say that I don't enjoy taking pot shots at everything I read or see. I am not much of a critic since I tend to overlook detractions in favor of the work as a whole. But I found "A Brave New World" almost un-readable due to its poor grammar and shoddy style. Most of the glaring mistakes were in Huxley's figurative descriptions of Bernard's London and surroundings. Fortunately it is the dialog which advances the action and presents Huxley's new world vision. I wonder if the novel was originally concieved as a play.
