At the beginning of the Scarlet Letter when Hester is standing on the scaffold and Dimmesdale questions her about the father.. does he want her to tell so he won't have to tell the people or does he know she won't reveal he is the father.. i have read both ways on the internet and I am confused.. please help.

Yes, I have read the book and I think Dimmesdale knew Hester wasn't going to tell who the babies father was but like I said I have read it both ways so I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure... Thanks
