I found Mattie to be very girlish and silly and Zeena a common nagging hag in most respects , but enjoyed Ethan Frome's character. I grew up in the country and know about country people. Even though this book was written long ago , Wharton portrayed Ethan very well in his thoughts and words as a country person. He is a farmer , but undeniably deep. Those who look simple are most of the time the most complex. The book was morbid and hopeless , but you have to discover the genius in a well - written , engrossing story with a terribly depressing ending. Everyone's read of love - triangles , but (as always) the classic authors blow away any modern attempts at love stories.
