Hey
I'm from Brazil, just like Paulo Coelho. He's the most known brazilian writer worldwide, but he surely isn't the best one. Not even a good one. In many bookstores in Brazil his books are in the self-help area, not in the literature one. Saddly he's now a member of the Brazilian Academy of Literature, so he's treated with respect by those who don't know him well enough. Anyway, if you're interested in good brazilian literature I recommend something by Machado de Assis. And don't waste your time with Coelho...

I read The Alchemist, but I have to admit, that I didn't really like it. I was neither impressed, nor emotionally touched. Thank you very much for recommending a different Brazilan author though. I'll try to find a book written by him. Which one did you like best and what is is about?

Well, there's "Memórias Póstumas de Bras Cubas", wich can be translated to something like "Aftergrave Memories of Bras Cubas" (sorry if the title doesn't match the one of the version in your bookstores, but I never got my hands on the english edition...). It is a first-person auto biographical book, and it is about the life of a brazilian rich man of the nineteenth century.
Another good one is Don Casmurro.

Machado de Assis is the best writer we've ever had, all his writings are amazing. If the translation is decent I'm sure you'll enjoy it...

Hi!
I read the Alchemist, it was totally amazing, I really loved it and Coelho became one of my favorite writers. Do you believe that he had written this book in two weeks only?!
I've also read Manual of the Warrior of Light it's so inspiring! 8)
I found his writings impressing, they are simple too.
