I thought this book was awesome. I really disagree with the ones said it was a waste of time because it was worth all the time i spent reading it. The things i loved the most was raoul never gave up on the one he loved. I also thought poor erik was so lonely and depressed and i knew how poor christine was totally torn. I really felt a part of the whole story. Especially how Gaston made it seem so realistic and so true that i believed it could possibly have happened. This was the first time i've read or seen the phantom of the opera. It makes me real happy to listen to the music and now put the pieces together of this incredible story. The way Gaston described the music that Erik sang with so much feeling it made me want to sing with all my being. It really makes me proud to sing in choir that maybe we can sing with feeling like Erik must have shown. I was so happy that at the end Erik let Christine and Rauol be together. That part really touched my heart and if people can't see that Erik's heart was good, they need to read it more often. I recommend this book to anyone that likes romance and adventure.

Actually... it did happen. Just because the book is labeled under "fiction" doesn't mean that it is. There has been evidence uncovered that this tragedy did in fact occur. If you get the chance sometime, go the the Opera Garnier and look around. My French teacher has been there several times, and has even see the house beyond the lake - of course, it's bricked up now... but you can tell it's there. If you are lucky enough to befriend any employees, you can poke around a bit more, and discover the places discussed in the book.

Of course, some bits of the story may have been altered, either as an attempt to make it more poetic, or simply because Mssr. Leroux did not have all the facts, but... it did happen. :bawling: The disfigurement was caused by an all-too-real disease that can be treated in the modern day and age. This is known as autoimmune, a disease in which the body's own disease-fighting cells attack the body itself.

I thought this was an interesting fnd myself... I am in choir as well, and try my hardest to sing with Erik's passion... I have often been called the "new Christine", a name which I am not particularly fond of, but I suppose it may fit...

I dunno.

But I can understand where they're coming from. It's a great book, but it's a hard start. It starts slower... and it doesn't really grab your interest until a few chapters into it, but then you can't put it down.
The style is also really difficult because it's a century old. It's like LotR- it's a great story, but I personally didn't like the style, so I didn't really read it.
It really is true that the first chapter sells the book, so if it doesn't grab you- you'll put the book down.

I read The Phantom of the Opera, and loved it. It is something so different from the play and movie, it's as if it is a different story altogether. Everybody is familiar with the play and movie, the book is a treasure yet to be discovered by others.

i completely agree, although i did like the way it was cut for the play version. The book was different, from the details to the overall style, so it did have a different effect on me. I do agree that the first chapter didn't really hook me, but the fact that it was the Phantom of the Opera kept me on since i love the musical so much... i've also come to see that most of the books i end up liking have a not-so-good beginning in comparison with the events that come afterward, so i usually stick with books til the middle. if the middle doesn;t get me, that's when i put it down.

I could go on and on about how much I love the whole story, but I won't bore you all to death, so I'll just say:
I LOVE POTO!

I love it, too, but I also love the play and film versions. I have both film versions, but I love the one with Emmy Rossum best, I think.

But the book, definitely not a waste of time, rather very rewarding.
