Hesse's message was to find enlightenment through one's own individuality and combine it with one's own connection to the world as a whole. We can all achieve this, a higher understanding of life, but only through our own experiences. No religion, no other man could teach how to become like the "awakened one," only direct. Hesse boldly introduced the idea of following one's own path, listening to the voice within and not the voice of others. Hesse was successful in his novel, and I commend him for his work, as I commend the work of the Gotama himself, and the work of Christ.
