As a Chinese, I randomly picked up this book from the library and to my surprise, after reading siddhartha, I can't believe that Hermann Hesse, being a European, could understand the eastern thoughts so comprehensively and revealed the Indian philosophy so brilliantly in such a novel. Actually, it reminds me of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress which centres similarly on the theme of self-awakening.
