DEAR MOM,
I think that soon they are going to allow me to go out of here as there is a nice man and woman who have become very interested in me. They have been here to look at me, bring me snacks and the woman has taken me out of my cage for walks each time they are here to visit me.
I have a friend here, who has been telling me how to act when they come to visit me. She is a German Shepherd named Alice and is very old and going blind and can barely walk, so they don’t keep her locked up. She had a master who was her guardian, and lived in a warm house then he died in an accident and no one wanted to care for her. Alice knows that her life will end here, so she is helping me not to do things that will keep me from being unwanted. So, I can live in a nice foster home but I must not chew up cushions, furniture, rugs, plants, pee on carpets, poop inside the house also to sit, come, wait, and not to bark without a good reason. Above all, look the owners sadly in their eyes and wag my tail when I greet them. I really wish Alice was younger and we could play but in this place I have learned that wishing is not reality.
Life here is not laborious but I am often sad, and feel fortunate to have Alice as a friend, otherwise I would try to escape, especially in October when the cold pale moon shines down on me and all the dogs here begin to howl in low sorrowful voices. It is at those times she reminds me that I will find a family who will want to take me from here and not despair, even so four years is a long time to be punished for stealing a piece of meat from the butchers shop and biting the dog catchers’ arm when he caught me. I have been talking with Alice and have decided to start a legal nonprofit firm to advise dogs that make mistakes and are unjustly punished. I have found a very willing group of smart and experienced ones to help me. The members are a Labrador retriever, two German Shepherds, A French Bulldog, a Poodle, Beagle and a Rottweiler that once worked with a carjacking mob. We have decided to call ourselves Dogs Are Us, Legal assistance on four feet. I think that this team will be a howling success at the Kennel Club.
Mom,
I have gotten some very good news. The people who have been to see me have informed the authorities here that they want to take me home with them this weekend and they will mail this letter for me.
And I have a question for you that has been bothering me for years.
My coat is grey in color sort of like highway paving and curly like a sheep. Was my father by chance a wandering black Labrador.
Love your son
MAX
