In our school production this year, we are playing the musical version of Les Mis, and I have, for the moment, the role of Enjorlas.

I am not particular familiar with the story, and any insights into the play and/or my role would be appreciated.

I can only tell you a little--I haven't seen the play, just read the book, and that was a while ago. I figured I would give you the basics, and someone who knows more can fill in the details and correct me if I'm wrong.

Enjolras is a passionate young idealist who revolts against France's government. (After Napoleon's downfall, the monarchy was restored in France, but I don't think it was very stable.) Enjolras and other university students, who want to revert back to the Republic, revolt and barricade themselves inside a section of the city of Paris. Though their fight is really hopeless, Enjolras (the leader) believes wholeheartedly in their cause and would fight for it to the death. The most important thing, probably, about his character is that he is a man of action, whereas Marius, who is also a passionate idealist, is more of a dreamer. Enjolras knows exactly what he wants and what he's going to do to get it. At least, that is the impression I get.

If you want to get information about him from the book, he is introduced in chapter 176: http://www.online-literature.com/victor_hugo/les_miserables/176. Also, if you read all of chapter 180 http://www.online-literature.com/victor_hugo/les_miserables/180 you might get an idea of the goals of Enjolras' group of friends in how they contrast with Marius' original ideas. Enjolras only says a few words in this chapter, but it reveals something about his character and ideas. The revolt is described around chapter 300 or so; you'll have to look around some, but you should be able to find something that would give you further insight into Enjolras' character.

Good luck and have fun with the musical!

When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drum, it is the music that will make our song arise!

Aww, I wish I could see it! That was one of my favorite books, but I've never been able to see the musical. :(
