I soooo totally agree. This novel has completely left me perplexed, baffled and mystified, too.

if this "novel" leaves you scramling for a dictionary, maybe you should reconsider your career choice.

Just something to think about: couldn't one of Conrad's purposes in this book be to confuse the reader and make them think on the inner phyche? Possibly, to make them figure things out on their own instead of giving them all the answers?<br><br>This is just a thought that occured to me. I'm no English major, and certainly not as versed as most on liturature.<br><br>And for the record, I don't care for the book either, for reasons of my own.

Is it necessarily a disadvantage if this book raises questions about the workings of the human soul? I also find that Conrad makes some very pertinent observations about Imperialism in this novella...

I agree with you to. My teacher asigns us this book, and even admits that she doesn't even understand it fully! I don't understand how High School students *even thought it was given in senior honors english* can possibly even begin to get the complex messages in this book. Yeah, and my teacher says that honor students are to advanced for "Lord of the Flies" I say we shouldn't be tortured in our last year of high school.

I was left more confused about the inner psyche of the soul from reading this book than if I had not! I throughly enjoy lit--so much in fact that I am working on my PhD in it and even I dislike this"novel". I had to read it when I was in high school and again in undergrad school and I swear I disdained it even more when I had the knowledge to critique it. For all of the confused souls out there, I recommend you read the novel "Lord of the Flies", as it is a true depiction of life that will not leave you scrambling for a dictionary!!!
