I am a Russian woman living permanently in Denmark. As a student of linguistic at Copenhagens Business School I had to choose 5 books for the exam in British and American literature. One of the books chosen occured to be The Jungle. What can I say? My general impression of the book is positive, supposed that everything described in the novel is true. My teacher who has spent a lot of years in the USA says that it is how people lived in America at that time. Many a man, however, say that the writer exaggerates a lot in his description of the ordeals of the life in America in the beginning of the 20th century and that the whole book is nothing but an unfair attack on the capitalism as a political system in general and the American life style in particular. I do not perceive the book with unmixed delight, but must admit it gives some stuff to your mental work.
