When delving into crticism about certain aspects of The Jungle, it is important to focus on the meanings of seemingly unsignificant and drowned-out events. Anyone who has taken the course of life knows that there are certain aspects of history which pain the senses, and can still reverberate to comtemporary socitey and its corruption. One cannot look at any work of literature and not know that the author had a reason for writing it, because all writing does not come from thin air, but from a conscious awareness of interior and exterior temperaments. Most fiction is based on reality principles which convey an alterior and specific message. In Sinclair's case, it is the message of the social responsibility of those with power, to protect the weak, and be fair in their endeavors. Without Sinclair's valid insight, the Food and Drug Administration might not have been established, and the novelties with which we experience life would not exist.
