At last I have found like minded company concerning this novel! I first became aware of it after watching PBS's televised version of the story and then I read the book. The heroine's naivete and behavior was very realistic tingles, unlike the melodramatic and very overly stylized heroines of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. I absolutely agree this is a feminist novel about women's independence and breaches controversial topics such as spousal abuse, rampant alcoholism and mothers' rights. I thought it was very interesting and I wish it were recommended reading for every high schooler and college student!
