I read this book when I was 10 years old, and fell in love with it. (if I understood it at that age, surely YOU can!) This marvel of a novel is simply a piece of literature that needs to be CHEWEDand DIGESTED. Its only confusing to people who try and RUSH through it, -something that's NOT possible with classics like Hugo's. Besides, the more classics you read, the EASIER it is to understand the language. The plot wasn't "cliche" because every plot like it was a spin-off of Hugo's PURELY original creation.

For those who love classics like "Notre Dame de Paris", and "Les Miserables", I highly recommend also "the Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux.
