First of all, I must agree that it is indeed a great novel, with a thick and intricately-crafted plot, numerous tear-jerking sequences, and extremely detailed descriptions of.. well almost every event, character, history and even locality.

However, i think the extent of coincidence in the story went too far that it became a flaw. Think of the countless occasions Javert kept bumping into Valjean. The Thenadiers being marius' father's -hero-? Oh!! So he must choose between saving the life of his love's father or his father's saviour in that split second. HA! Another coincidence I can remember is the -special- relationship between gavroche and the two lost kids. HA again! My favourite one is this scene whereby Valjean climbed out of the sewers just in time to meet up with his old pal Javert and say 'Hi, I'm here and I've saved you the trouble of looking me up and have me arrested at my home.' By the way, how big was paris in the early 1800s?

It's simply too drama-ma-ma. Well, what can i say? Hugo is a great dramatist. And I mean drama-tist, not the person who writes drama. =)
