Although there is no quesion of the historic value of the author's comments on the war and the politics of the time, it is the human relationships that bring me back to read this book again and again. Although the situations change from generation to generation and century to century, there is not a feeling in this book that has not been felt since time began up until the present time. It is the forgiveness given to the foibles and atrocities committed by the very human characters in this book that gives me hope that perhaps there is forgiveness for our own modern and heartless foibles. There is perhaps redemption even for us.
