incidentally, i did not find the first few pages boring. of course the novel has a huge reputation, and it's easy to build up high expectations, but then i started reading it with an open mind, and almost from the first line i was very impressed with the story. i loved the introductions to the various characters via anna pavlovna's soiree, and i found it appealing that in a novel called 'war and peace' things started in a relatively 'domestic' fashion. of course after the first few pages a lot more happened which further increased the novel's appeal. but please, i notice a lot of people say that they found these pages boring. they are the foundations of the novel, without which the characters and their actions would have little plausibility.
