Man in the Iron Mask

This book was truly hard to understand from a student's point of view. I have only begun to read The Man in the iron Mask, but i am already puzzled. Is this book somehow a sequel to the Three Musketeers? Do I need to read something else in order to understand this book better? What do I need to read? There is not really information about the story on the web, if you know any please let me know!

I was was once like you and understand fully there are 3 or 4 books in between one called 20 years after the one that is met to be read afterthe three musketeers than it gets a bit tricky because the next book was broken down into 3 or 4 parts depending on the publisher the order I know them as is " the Vi Comnte de Bragelone than f Louise de la Valliere an finaly The man in the Iiron Mask sometimes before that you see one called 10 years later but the man in the iron mask is the last.
