Alexander Dumas could crank out novels at a rate that is almost inconceivable for an author writing in the days before the invention of word processors, desk lamps, and high-caffeine cola. He claimed to have penned (or quilled?) more than 1,000 works. Various scholars put the figure at between 200 and 300. Still impressive. These were, for the most part, not slim volumes. More importantly, Dumas's works have survived and flourished, entertaining generations of readers. He achieved great fame and fortune in his own time. Though he gained his greatest contemporary fame from his plays, Dumas is best remembered today for The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, novels that have taken a permanent place on the classic bookshelf. Like the characters he created, Alexander Dumas was amazing and unforgettable.
