I happen to think that the portrayal of the Grangers as both God-fearing and decent citizens yet unlawful and murderous to the last degree shows a deliberate ambiguity and is an oxymoron in its self. It shows the hypocrisy that religious people often display, hypocrisy in religion is thus a major theme.
