Contrary to other opinions, this is a work of genius. What can you expect from Jane? If you had no family or kindred, have been abused by others, and have your best and only friend die before your own eyes, you would be weeping too. My teacher said that similies and metaphores are part of what makes a good story. I was able to picture everything. Yes, there are many complex rather frivilous words, but that helped me to no end. With those words I raised my reading mark and had the joy of outwitting my peers.
Jane is by far my favourite herion. She proves that women are equal to men. which in the 19th century, was something nearly impossible to do. We, as women we expected to be air heads and work under the commands of our masters/brothers/husbands/fathers. She was painfully modest and frank, but that adds to character.
Mr. Rochester was very impetuous indeed, but he never meant to hurt Jane with his past. I've never read about a more caring and devoted man than him. He is NOT what we would call a "playa" these days.
I recommend this book for anyone who has a taste for true english literature. Girls, in particular, guys only care for books that include blood and gory stuff. This is a masterpiece worth reading over and over again.
Sincerely,
Meganne, Ontario Canada
P.S I read this book when I was 12 years old. I am still 12 years old now .
