    Question One Poem that represents Emily's entier career

    I had been reading Emily Dickinson's (and other poets) poem as part of my school work. They are full of metaphor allegory; and I like them once I get to know the meaning of the poems. I think her poems are thought provoking.

    As part of my work, I have to chose one poem that is a good representation of the poet's entire literary career. I am thinking of chosing Emily Dickinson as the poet. But, I need help in identifying the one poem that best represents her career. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Difficult to decide, but, in essence, this comes down to choosing a favorite poem by Dickinson that I feel contains the ultimate talent and uniquity of her as a poet - very difficult to decide. Perhaps not my ultimate decision, but I would place a lot of consideration upon this poem, which contains her common themes of death, loneliness, and some sort of progression, a dark mood, and metaphors galore:
    Because I could not stop for Death,
    He kindly stopped for me;
    The carriage held but just ourselves
    And Immortality.

    We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
    And I had put away
    My labor, and my leisure too,
    For his civility.

    We passed the school where children played
    At wrestling in a ring;
    We passed the fields of gazing grain,
    We passed the setting sun.

    We paused before a house that seemed
    A swelling of the ground;
    The roof was scarcely visible,
    The cornice but a mound.

    Since then ’tis centuries; but each
    Feels shorter than the day
    I first surmised the horses’ heads
    Were toward eternity.
