Darwin had racial biases that were popular at the time. In the 1800's he didn't have the data we have now which show how similar all races of humans are genetically. His core theory of evolution is correct but he was wrong about human races, it turns out our differences are very superficial.

    Dear Mr. Running Elk,

I think you mistake Darwin's argument. In chapter 7 he raises the idea that the various races might be different species only to demolish it! He has no doubts whatever that all humans belong to the same species and that they are essentiyally the same in mind. He only excepts that different human groups have different customs.

You can also find in the Voyage of the Beagle his empassioned objections to slavery, his extreme dislike of the Argentinian Indian killer Rosas and his admiration for the heroism and determination of the Patagonian Indians who fought far their lands and liberty.

Darwin normally tends to write in a somewhat circumspect way as his social views were quite radical for his day, and because he tended to give competing views a long airing befor demolishing them.

All the serious Darwin specialists know that his views were, even by today's standards, quite liberal. It is vexing that this is not well know among non-specialists who have been told quite falsely that he was some sort of right wing racist.

Yours, Pete Richerson

I for one am not fond of his work on the Decent of Man. Though that is my personal oppion, but how could he call man, different species, upon their color and location?
