    'The Skunk Brothers'

    Written with the illustrious Nixon...

    ***

    let the year 2005
    be reknowed
    as the year of chive
    for three young lives
    collided in a downward
    spiral of utter denial
    based on basic herbal desire
    three spliffs ingnited
on a cherry fire lit night
    by a single flame
    we reconvened at jackson's place
after a day in the city
    the epitomy of teen cliche
    when we missed our train
    and collapsed ragged
    on the platform
    looking forward
    to drawing on spliffs
    rolled from the score
    in nixon's pocket

    we watched as he
    emptied that baggie
    to roll a fatty
    but we never realised
    quite what happened
    on that rainy hazy night

    five years on
    and the hat bong rests
    an ornament of
    the blazed days
    a sacred reminder
    of the skunkbrother way
    our stolen faces
    shrouded by heavy smoke

    but now we know
    brothership
is based on more than dope

A humorous piece that really tells a coherent short story from beginning to end. Nice use of subtle, poetic language.
"As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being." --Carl Gustav Jung

"To absent friends, lost loves, old gods, and the season of mists; and may each and every one of us always give the devil his due." --Neil Gaiman; The Sandman Vol. 4: Season of Mists

"I'm on my way, from misery to happiness today. Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh" --The Proclaimers

Your poem is tight and essential, its message is strong and clear and your poetry so natural... I love it and thank you.

The "baggie/fatty" line was so appropriate to the rest of this seemingly spontaneous but beautifully controlled poem. I confess though that the reference to "nixon" is puzzling because I don't think you mean the historic Nixon, but his image and his politics intervene.

Thank you guys! Your comments are greatly appreciated... And I wrote the poem late last night with my friend Nick, one of my 'Skunk Brothers'. Those heady days were where I adopted the name Sampson, and Nick became Nixon. Jack became Jackson.

It's a silly tradition, but we all remember the so called 'blazed days' fondly. The poem was an indulgence for Nick and I to write, so it's great that you guys enjoyed it so much!

    Cheers guys!

Revolte, what is it you don't like about pot poems? (I tend to find the vocabulary of stonerdom rather limited myself, so for me pot poems can all sound a little alike). Glad you like this one though...
