Crime and Punishment, Anyone?

Having recently gone through my home library, and having picked up my copy of Crime and Punishment, as well as having recently picked up a hard copy of the "SparkNotes" for this book, I am ready to tackle this wonderful novel for but the second time. In doing so, I would like to enjoin others (for those whom might be interested) in also reaching for their own copy of this novel, and read along with me. By doing this, we can formulate a research group and dissect the novel, post individual messages and critiques about the work, with hopes of furthering our own understanding.

How many books can you read at once?

When reading only classical literature (as I don't generally read contemporary literature), I can usually read four or five at a time. Sometimes, I do it just to ensure that I can keep up with the different plots, characters, etc. I think of it as a brain exercise.

Some months ago I read the novel. As the least enjoyed of several Dostoevsky novels, I would be happy to reconsider.

I read it a while back and though it was a difficult read, it became one of my favorite novels. I'd be happy to put in a comment or two as you all read it!

Aha! What coincidence!

It's next on my list, after Plato's Republic. Though, this will be my 3rd attempt at reading it, I confess. This time I will finish!

I am simply amazed at the response received to date with respect to reading "Crime and Punishment." I am all too aware of the difficulty in reading the novel -- it is sometimes difficult to understand and even more difficult to follow; but it's great "brain exercising," and after one starts to read it, it's rather difficult to put down! I think that most would agree.

I usually like to make comments about the chapters as I go, leave a question or two (usually those questions for which I don't have an answer); then we can proceed to the next chapter(s). I enjoy reading; but I also enjoy dissecting the information as I go. So, when all of you are ready, I will proceed in leaving some comments about chapter I in my next note.

I will carry the novel around with me. Took me forever to read it, so I don't mind going over the chapters a little bit to answer some questions. Ready when you are! Like I mentioned, it's my favorite book...I should at least have read it twice!!

Excellent Response. "Crime and Punishment" is a very difficult book to follow and understand. I will post some information later today. I have just completed chapter five, but I will go back to chapter one, and leave some questions, as well as some critique.
