    On like a Rolling Stone

Preface by author: I have posted this in another board on another website; the reaction was silence, a cricket's chirp. Although it takes for it's basis a popular song by Bob Dylan, from what is written and heard I have attempted to yank any philosohpical matter out. I could have added more, as the more I listen to it the more I see. However I am lazy and feel sleep taking hold. Anyways I would be even more pleased if such add-ons were done in replies.

If Bob Dylan’s most revered song was written as a slant upon a nameless woman then he would not be known. Hamlet was not written as a slant on anyone, neither was Odyssey or Don Quixote. To think that all that his song about is a bitter taste from the lips of a petty girl is juvenile and frankly sick. Why, that would reduce it among the ranks of a note passed in a middle school classroom, and him among the culprit who wrote it. It is not, however, among the ranks of those works I juxtaposed with it; I used those as examples of mere art, which is what Like a Rolling Stone is. The song was written about himself. Any inkling that may hint at Edie or any woman else is an example of his lyrical dialogue, probably influenced from drugs, which, as a listener to say this is quite selfish, made it all the better for us. Take his recent Working Man’s Blues, which was not, obviously, influenced by drugs, at least not any heavy ones beyond Tobacco of Marijuana. It unanimous that that song is a backwards look upon himself, though, he has said before, never had a real job. Such is the same case for Like a Rolling Stone, and since the backwards glance was done at such a young age, probably due to guilt - see his “I was young when I left home,” if you have any doubts upon my conjecture - and aggravated by drugs, fame and life, the vision captured in the looking-glass is all the more intense; the bang in the star, sounds like an atomic bomb, is the feeling he felt when he looked in the mirror. But such is the feeling felt by everyone who looks into a mirror objectively; a feeling that you all you know of yourself is you are “with no direction home, a complete unknown, like a rolling stone.” A feeling that when someone attempts to say the opposite of, attempts to pin you down in crumb-bum Time Magazine, or when knee-deep in problems, under a heavy weight and sweating on a stage, someone thinks they got you all figured out cries “Judas!” posses you to scream “Play it *beep* loud!” Such is what we say, in one way or another everyday, to everyone, who thus says the does the same thing.

Hmm, an interesting spin on the song. I guess I never broke it down to its basic elements.

Yeah, it's the way my mind works. Another prime example of my philosophy would be this, a preface to one of my journals:

To write about one's self through daily experience is like tracking a storm; you need the equipment to do it properly and frankly I don't know what such equipment would be, nor think that anyone does. As in Cain and Abel, however, one should do their best. Because to know what to include in an all-encompasing compsotion of one's daily life would need to know the meaning of life as one may know the roads about their hometowns. And even then, what langauge is their to use? These synthensized mumbles that have evolved little from the grunts of a caveman and change from nation of people to nation of people? Only the gibbersih the Apostles spoke at Pentacost would suffice, and only the knowledge of God would make those ends meet. So to begin verily what follows are the disjointed memories, fading as they are created, of a life, stormy yet common, still searching for something great to be coorelated with itself, a goal shared by everyone.

If that grabbed your attention hit me up; I'm trying to spread my literary oats:

all these turn obsolete when you are ¨knocking at heavens door¨...
when you cantshoot anymore words , guns , or lies...all to fill the meanwhile
from birth to death...to give a sense to a life or toscape through drugs.

The only thing one needs to track their daily life, the entire story of their life for that matter, is blunt and brutal honesty. Most people don't have it, but those who do possess this precious equipment can look a storm in the eye and make it quiver like a scared, wet kitten.

    Like a rolling stone

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
    You used to laugh about
    Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

    How does it feel
    How does it feel
    To be without a home
    Like a complete unknown
    Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
    You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
    He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

    How does it feel
    How does it feel
    To be on your own
    With no direction home
    Like a complete unknown
    Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

    How does it feel
    How does it feel
    To be on your own
    With no direction home
    Like a complete unknown
    Like a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

    How does it feel
    How does it feel
    To be on your own
    With no direction home
    Like a complete unknown
    Like a rolling stone?

I am a fan of Bob Dylan. Your quoting of him, or any mention of him makes me emotionally charged. I feel like crying when I listen to his songs. They touch me very deep. No words can be enough to describe him.

I believe great artists rise a little above ground and Bob Dylan has risen much higher above ground. All of his songs are really transforming and at times they sound to me as deeply spiritual as the Buddha's teachings.

I do not know I have said too much of him, but I get really lost in his poems, maybe etherized.

“Those who seek to satisfy the mind of man by hampering it with ceremonies and music and affecting charity and devotion have lost their original nature””

“If water derives lucidity from stillness, how much more the faculties of the mind! The mind of the sage, being in repose, becomes the mirror of the universe, the speculum of all creation.

Do you really thing Bob Dylan isn't listen to by teens?
He is the eternal teen musician - o.k not only him - but what he represents and has always represented and Mick Jagger and that whole generation of musicians!
They are all about what teen agers are about....
Maybe not all teen agers but the ones with a head of their own on there shoulders - for sure... sit around listening to Dylan and brood.... just like we did -
and about Mick Jagger looking young - do you really think so?
