    stay

    .

    stay

    don’t run
even though the impulse is strong
    the pain follows…immeasurably…instantaneously
    ..........uncontrollably
    immerses…surrounds…engulfs
    like an old lover’s embrace
    thoughts converge
    focus is lost
    a gasp for air
then a glimpse of the sky
    but wait
    stay

there is time enough to dash ahead
to engage the mind and the body in thoughts and activities
    that avoid

    watch
    wait
    stay
    listen
    feel
    ssshhhhh

    * * * * * *

    don’t run
even though the temptation is great
a new day beckons…sweeping the old away
    welcoming…reaching…encircling
    like a new lover’s embrace
    the heart remembers
the desire to rush ahead displaces the pain
the realist is nudged aside, the romantic returns
    but wait
    stay

there is time enough to think back, to linger, to reminisce
to learn all there is to learn even as the pain recedes and warm memories
    replace

    watch
    wait
    stay
    listen
    feel
    ssshhhhh

I love this poem, Donna! It has something in it that really makes the reader want to read till the end. The way it is written, it's like we are thrown into it and we just follow the tide.

Oh I like this so much, Cdn. A going-through rather than avoiding or displacing. Well done. I like the silence in the middle. It worked and made me wait to finish. You are quite prolific lately, what is your secret?

And loved it even more when it recurred at the end, the recurrence suggesting the difficulty of following your own instruction to your heart.

Thanks very much for all your kind words, folks. Fire, my secret is easy. I'm really not so prolific in the "now".... I just pull 'em outta the archives (and I'm running out!!!).
