    Paradise Lost-First 5 lines

"Of man's first disobedience, and the fruit
Of that forbidden tree, whose mortal taste
Brought death into the world, and all our woe,
With loss of Eden, till one greater man
Restore us, and regain the blissful seat,"

Milton is setting up the rest of his writings. This is the beginning so it is describing what the rest will be about. He is going to be writing about Adam and Eve in Eden. The first initial sin of the human race according to christianity is that Eve took a bite out of the apple on a tree in Eden which God directly prohibited. This was humans first disobedience of God's wishes and therefore "sinned" against him. Because they disobeyed this order or wish from God they brought sin into the world, death, terror and woe, otherwise all known as evil. Adam and Eve were cast out of Eden or "paradise" because of this sin, this giving into Satan the serpent. We lost Eden so therefore some great man or one that has not sinned may be able to bring us all back to Eden. A saviour, a messiah, a redeemer is what could bring us back into God's paradise again.
This book is debated religion, the idea of the fight between good and evil and God and Satan so this is obviously something a person makes their own opinion or views on according to their specific beliefs. This book is John Miltons ideas and views on such a subject. All you really need to do to understand the book more fully is read the bible, learn about catholic religion and it will explain these ideas. He has obviously used the bible as a resource so that would be the simplest resource for others to use.
