Question Meaning or message of the novel.

Hi there, I'd just like some help.
I recently completed this book for a class summer project. It was a difficult read, and although I understand the events (barely) and have read the sparknotes and everything, I feel like I failed to grasp the full meaning or message of the book.

So, I want to ask, what do you think the meaning or overall message of this novel was?
