Little Birds of the Night

I just thought this was a wonderful little poem

Little Birds of the Night

LITTLE birds of the night
Aye, they have much to tell
Perching there in rows
Blinking at me with their serious eyes
Recounting of flowers they have seen and loved
Of meadows and groves of the distance
And pale sands at the foot of the sea
And breezes that fly in the leaves.
They are vast in experience
These little birds that come in the night

I love Stephen Crane's poems! They're so simple but so powerful.

Yes indeed very beautiful. One question that arises is :can we compare these little fragile birds to old people at the end of their lives? If we had to analyse it What would we say? Any ideas?

That is an interesting thought. After reading back over the poem again with that in mind, yes it is very clear now how the poem could speak of the elderly and the sort of bittersweet of thier reminsincens. The things once had now lost which cannot be experinced again. The old memories, that are now forever that.

I agree. That really does make a lot of sense. "They have much to tell" and "They are vast in experience" especially give that impression.
