Questions on the Wife of Bath
1. Does Chaucer actually suggest that she is from the city of that name? Surely in Chaucer`s day there were privately run bath houses that served a variety of functions - including possibly that of a brothel.
2. In the Prologue Chaucer suggests that she provides quack cures for sexually transmitted diseases. Does the text also indicate that she is an abortionist? Sorry if any of this has been covered in other threads. |
