The Secret Sharer is a novella written by Joseph Conrad in 1909, and first published in book form in 1912, though it had appeared in Harper’s before then. It contains a theme typical for Conrad; that of a solitary character challenged from external and internal agents.

The Secret Sharer was written in December of 1909 during composition of "Under Western Eyes" and was published in 1912 into a compilation of short stories named "'Twixt Land and Sea".

Furthermore, it may be of interest that this title wasn't chosen by Conrad but his literary agent. Though, if you're attempting an essay on this text and were to quote this, it would be apposite to refer to the contemporary modernist theories of New Criticism [or Barthe] which posits that authorial intention is not wanted or needed when analysing a text.
