Has anyone here ever read anything Brazilian? (paulo coelho doesn't count!) I'm Brazilian and recently started reading Brazilian literature and am loving it. Machado de Assis is excellent, if anyone is interested. also clarice lispector, guimarães rosa and graciliano ramos.
I have read Lispector's "The Hour of the Star" and "The Passion According to G. H.". She seems to be a darling in graduate courses but I have to admit her narratives are a little postmodern for my taste. She is a fantastic writer, though and I always feel provoked having read her.
I have to admit my S. American literature exposure is pretty limited. I love JL Borges, GG Marquez and MV Llosa (I just realized they all go by their 3 names...) and would be very interested to pick up new authors on recommendation.
I've tried Clarice and must admit I don't like her, though she seems to be something of a cult author. I love José Mauro de Vasconcelos, though. And I loved Monteiro Lobato in my childhood
I'm brazilian too and i don't like our literature so much.
I prefer american or european authors, but Jorge Amado and Machado de Assis are good.
I will definitely look out for the authors you mention. Any particular books to look out for.
Amado's Pen Sword and Camisole is a very funny and satisfying read.

by Clarice Lispector the other day. She's like the Brazilian Bruno Schulz a bit. I like her. Some of the sentences do not make sense though. But I'm pretty sick of stuff waking sense all the time.
