    Siddhartha's beauty

    Hesse describes Siddhartha's beauty.
What is the importance of it? and community wise?

Perhaps Siddhartha's beauty is first meant to give us a description of this well-to-do youngman showing that he dosen't really need to pursue a journey in which he has undertaken. Later on he reflects on how when things came easily to him and his looks that he used it as a crutch for thought and realizes how foolish he was in the grandscheme of things.

I think that his beauty is a narrative device, as becomes clear when he has his awakening with Kamala. If he was not beautiful in the first place it would not be possible to demonstrate that he took his beauty for granted in the beginning before losing it, and in losing it becomes awakened.
This sheds light on the transendental nature of the body, and indeed all things physical, allowing Siddhartha to realise that 'he' is not his body but in fact the immortal energy of his being as part of Atman.
