I thought that he was waiting to judge the character of those usurpers. He judges them on how they treat houseguests, his staff, his wife and son. None of them were deemed worthy of mercy by him. He also gains the advantage of surprise, and with that the initiative. He was a warrior, and surprise and initiative are essential when you are outnumbered to increase your odds of success.
