    quiz questions

    hi i'm new on here,
I wondered if anyone could shed any light on the following questions. As i
    have run into a wall.

1/Which impoverished beauty is terrified on receiving diamonds as a wedding gift? ( i thought of Tess of the D'urbervilles, but she wasn't terrified).

2/Who writes an unsatisfactory thank-you letter for a platinum and gold ring?

3/ Who gets manhandled during a performance of Tristan and Isolde?

4/Which hanged mans feet box the compass?

5/Which novel opens with the white-suited cadaver on an island of bones?

6/ Who tucks a will into a book of sermons?

7/Who flings a bible into the fire then pulls it out again?

8/ Who is thrashed at Tennis wearing skintight bermuda shorts?

9/In which novel is a man arrested for murder after hitting a six that smashes a bottle of lemonade?

Any hints would be appreciated, Thanks Tautau

I have read the Tristam and Isolde novel and the one where the hanged man boxes the compas, but I can't remember what they were. In all that is a really horrible quiz.

#5 is The Savage from Adolous Huxley's Brave New World ( I was very confused by that; how could his feet be moving if he's dead?) and I tihnk #6 is that guy from one of those old early American Puritian stories who met the devil in the woods. Young Goodman Brown, is it?

    Quiz questions

    Hi,

The answer to the one about the impoverished beauty receiving diamonds is Gwendoline Harleth from Daniel Deronda (George Eliot).

The character who was hit by a bouquet during a performance of the Mad scene from Lucia di Lammermoor is Harriet Herriton from Where Angels Fear To Tread (E.M.Forster).

The character thrashed at tennis wearing checked Bermuda shorts is John Self from Money (Martin Amis).

Hope this is of some help.

I got those from other sources, but thankyou anyway, I,ve got one to get.

Who writes an unsatisfactory thankyou letter for a platinum and gold ring?

After trawling through the nineteenth century,i think its a more recent book.

    Any ideas welcome..............

    Platinum and gold ring

    Hi there,

I'm still puzzling over this one. Will let you know if I get any sudden flashes of inspiration. A work colleague of mine thought it might be from The Golden Bowl, but haven't been able to find it. I think it's probably something more recent than this.

6/ Who tucks a will into a book of sermons?

I remember now; I think this one might be Tom Walker from The Devil and Tom Walker.

Thanks ArcherSnake, i got that one, it was: Indefer Jones, My cousin Henry, by Trollope.
Only one left is the Gold ,Platinum ring.
The prize, incidentally is £10,000 pounds worth of books.

I got runner-up a couple of years ago, hoping to go one better.

    Emu question

    Tautau,

Any idea about the answer to the emu question: In which book is someone clawed apart by an emu?

Some friends of mine who studied Eng. Lit. at uni. are trying to help out with the gold and platinum ring. As soon as they come up with anything, I'll let you know.

    Best regards

    Thanks

    Thanks, tautau.

I think I'm going to give up. That question (you know the one!) is driving me potty.
It's not "A Diamond as Big as The Ritz". I've just read it online and no refs. whatsoever. Unlikely anyway as we already had one Scott Fitzgerald qu. - the one about cufflinks.

Good luck to you and anyone else doing the quiz.

    Best regards

    Malpau
