''The poem reflects Santayana’s philosophical belief that spiritual fulfillment cannot be found in mystical or supernatural heavens, but rather through an appreciation of the beauty and grounding forces of the natural world.''

Santayana's beliefs and writings are similar to Whitman's in his Leaves of Grass where he sought spiritual fulfillment not in a distant supernatural heaven, but by treating the material world and the human body as divine. Whitman also rejected dogmatic or "mystical" skies for grounded earthly beauty. He placed spiritual value firmly on the physical world rather than in some metaphysical universe. Rather than fearing death as an end, Whitman looked to the earth for immortality suggesting that the dead live on as components of the soil. While Santayana criticized Whitman's poetry for what he perceived to be a lack of proper structure, they shared many ideas and outlooks in life.
