I know what my mother would choose, she would choose to have herself killed. I wouldn't want her to do that. People should live to better themselves, not others. I have no children and i don't plan on having any. If i did i might kill them if i was in that situation. I don't mean to sound bad, these are my moral values and how i value my life. I could live with myself. I would go on to the next day without a second thought.
The wish to acquire more is admittedly a very natural and common thing; and when men succeed in this they are always praised rather than condemned. But when they lack the ability to do so and yet want to acquire more at all costs, they deserve condemnation for their mistakes.

Why would he offer to have his family killed instead of him? Does room 101 have that big of an impact on society?
well in room 101 they use thier deepest fears... and to them this has never been presented to them in such a strenuous enviroment due to the inevitable day-to-day brainwashing so put in a tiny room with your worse fear would defineatley have that much of an impact......(hope this helps)

^ Yes, it is true that you are entitled to your own opinions and morals, HOWEVER, I think you are looking at it too black and white. Now, I don't know anything about you, so I am just making assumptions, but I'm assuming you don't have children. The love and bond between a parent and a child is the strongest bond humans can enter. I dont believe that you would really put yourself before your own child, but again, that is just my assumption

Methinks you don't understand phobias at all.

In that situation, Winston's mind is not working rationally at all. A person would sell their children, their parents, anyone, rather than face their Room 101 - in the circumstances of 1984.
Go to work, get married, have some kids, pay your taxes, pay your bills, watch your tv, follow fashion, act normal, obey the law and repeat after me: "I am free."
