To understand 1984 one only needs to observe and understand society, human nature and power in it's entirety. Imagine a world where revolutionary victors establish a world where the mere thoughts and mediums of communication are strictly controlled and audited. Welcome to 1984. O'Brian said it best when he mentioned The Party as "The Priests of Power" nothing more nothing less. From a logical standpoint one can calculated what this "Power" means. In the final part of the book O'brian mentions that God is Power, and power is the power over human beings, not just over the body but above all over the mind. Thus we have the equation... G=P (God is Power)
P=POH (Power over Humanity (Mind and Body)) From this we can justify G=POH. God being the Power that reigns over the mind(perception) and bodies(existence) of humanity. What this boils down to is control and who has it. By siezing and idolozing this philosophy of control the Party has not only created a God they've metaphorically become one. The Party represents the darkest extreme of human desire, the ability to control fate and existence at the perceptual and political level. Doublethink -- reality control, these are mere paradigms that represent the psychological defensive mechanisms we are all capable of. 1984 is a portrait of the capabilities and will power of the human spirit. We have the optimistic Winston Smith looking for a way to defeat the "Powers that be" and return power to the people. On the other side of the Spectrum we have O'Brian who I could identify as an incarnation of Big Brother wielding his power and luring Winston through his ambition to his demise. The book leaves a confusing finale, which makes the reader decide whether or not Winston was victorious. Suddenly you become the final character in the story, the judge and jury that must decide whether or not 2+2=4 or if 2+2=5. The ending makes you question and evaluate the strenght of the human spirit. Whether you support Emmanuel Goldstien or Big Brother, essentially two sides of the same coin, you are put into a position where you must decide which side, faces upward in the end. "There is learning, there is understanding and there is acceptance" You can read this book and have it passed through you undigested like the proverbial corn through the bird, or you can rise up with knowledge(Power) and overthrow Gods. When the horse decides to shake off it's flies, Big brother can only watch..
