The oldest profession in the world and still flourishing.

But where do you draw the distinction between prostitution and " I don't ever know how I'm going to repay you?"

As for the internet, are we talking about prostitution or porn?

Flourshing and sounds almost like a make up session.

    Good point.

Is there a difference between porn and prostitution?

Sometimes young men make the mistake of seeing prostitution as something darkly romantic or experiential in a tough sort of way. It isn't. Men who have to pay for sex are truly pathetic (and young men, you know you don't). Most women who sell their bodies are doing so out of desperation--from poverty, drug addiction, loan sharkery--and some are being enslaved by truly brutal criminals who would kill or cut them up if they tried to get out. Some--many, actually--were deceived into leaving distant countries (without any mention of prostitution) and are now too ashamed or intimidated to seek help. And having anything to do with any of that, when you think of it, is a pretty lousy thing to do to a woman.

It is true there are some paradoxes and ambiguities when you think about it. A girl's mom, for example, will probably approve if she dates a medical student more than an unemployed janitor. And that obviously has to do (in part) with wanting to know that her daughter is going to be financially okay. My advice to young men (and all men) is to make a commitment to yourself that you will not pay for sex, then smile at as many such excuses as you can dream up. You know perfectly well what going to a whore is, and you know that is not who you are. Why victimize a woman in the process of demonstrating it to yourself?

Wait a minute! How would Vivian (aka Julia Roberts) ever have hooked up with Whatshisname (aka Richard Gere) if not professionally? What would have become of the "fairy tale"?

That's not even to mention Gigi and Gaston. I shudder to think of the poverty of poor Gigi's life without her professional training. Instead of poverty and squalor, she wanders, dressed to the nines, through the boulevards of Paris while Maurice Chevalier sings, "Thank Heaven for Little Girls". OK. I'll admit it didn't work out so well for Fantine.
