Start with 2 x B / w metres, if B is the breaking strain of the string and w is the weight per metre. That's just a first thought, but I've no doubt that some Newton will give a much better answer.
    Voices mysterious far and near,
Sound of the wind and sound of the sea,
Are calling and whispering in my ear,
    Whifflingpin! Why stayest thou here?

ok lets start from the beginning.
if you were to hold a piece of string what would be the purpose for it?

The sum of its pieces. Sum pieces being better than nun (to get theological about it).

To whirl it. But only in principle. Whirled piece is a notoriously unobtainable goal. After you have whirled it, you can use it to lower yourself into a whole (see above: what is a whole string?).

It's the study of Van Gogh's brother. I hear he had the great man's ear.

The string whole, ou bien the whole string. You see? Each piece is less than the whole. Tie them together or you'll never get out.
