    Very sad. He was a great novelist and an interesting guy. At some point in old age he decided that fiction wasn't as important as he once thought. He began reading history, and expressed regret about his career choice. But he got it right. Hail and farewell!

    Such disappointing news. I'd always hoped he would have been awarded the Nobel Prize. Incidentally, the literature medal will not be awarded this year because of a #MeToo type incident. If he would have been still with us in 2019, would Philip Roth finally have received what he most richly deserved? Now we'll never know.
