Recently while reading I noticed the irony within the names of the various ministries in 1984. The ministry of truth is ironic because it is responsible for replacing fact with made up history. The ministry of peace is ironic because it is responsible for waging wars. The ministry of love because it is responsible for imprisoning enemies of the state. And the ministry of plenty is responsible for making the rations, and mainly cutting rations. These were just the first I noticed, but I found it interesting that Orwell left these clues that everything isn’t what it seems in this novel.
