Da'n för dopparda'n was an old custom for children from the days of poverty in Sweden, when they could dip their bread into the sauce for the meat.

Well, we have had a snowstorm today, so all is white and only the road junctions have been kept clear of deep snow. More expected tomorrow, so the white-out will continue.

That was on boxing day, today the roads and footways are treacherous, the ice under foot make walking or driving very difficult, so it is a stay at home day. busses and cars slide off the road, a day for accidents. it is called "under-cooled rain" "under-kylled regn". See https://www.thelocal.se/20171228/hea...ties-in-sweden.

The Local, by the way is Sweden's news source in English. I note that you have to subscribe to the Local to get the full news, beyond the headlines. That's a pity...

I have been exploring one of the websites that is something of a space blog. This one is called Deep Astronomy: https://deepastronomy.space/deepastronomy.xml, but it looks like it is a U-tube website. I'm still looking for a more general-purpose website.

The thermometer sticks around zero celsius, and it is often foggy here, as temperatures are kept up by warmer air. We have frozen snow on the ground making walking on it difficult. I remember how last winter it was like this until spring, which came late last year. May was the coldest for 150 years. Perhaps it will be cold this year, too.

All this is also a sign of global warming as winters used to be much colder, with temperatures around minus 20 celsius. It seems as though global warming affects the polar regions most of all, while the sub-polar regions like southern Norrland are also affected but less dramatically.

As it happens the Swedish weather forecast on 1 January mentioned the changing climate of the far north of Sweden, where there are 6 month of darkness and 6 month of light. The Lapps (Sami - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_people) - herd reindeer on the open hills but the pine forests are returning, threatening the traditional reindeer herds, that browse the open hills. We notice also this change here in southern Norrland with temperatures around zero celsius.

We are having a cold spell here, max around -10 celsius, so I have not gone out for a couple of days so far.
