    1984 compared to today

How is 1984 similar to today? How are the politics similar? Is the "sexual rules" or "gender roles" any different or the same?

I have always thought Huxley's Brave new world was closer to our current social and political reality .

I think 1984 really illustrates how much more control the government has on us now a days because of new technology. In the book, the telescreen supposedly watches and listens to Winston. In today's society we are constantly being watched by "security" cameras. They're supposed to make us feel safer but its really just another way for our government to invade our privacy. We didn't have this much invasion of privacy until recently. It really shows how Orwell sort of "predicted" the future, he "predicted" how technology would ultimately control our lives one day.

1984 is similar to today's society in many ways, mostly because of technology. Just like the telescreens, our computers and phones have cameras, that if anyone wanted or had the ability to, the could hack into and see what you are doing. There are also cameras everywhere you go. There are cameras all over schools, stores, and restaurants. However, the gender roles are different. As we see when Winston and Julia are in the apartment, Julia is prepared to fix the hole in the wall with some of the tools in her tool bag, while Winston is cowering in the corner because of the rat. Also, Julia generally decides their "dates."
